When it comes to sports courts, regular surface maintenance is required.
Proper care not only extends the life of a court, but when the time comes for resurfacing, it helps to keep costs low.
As you maintain your court through the seasons, there will be times when a professional assessment of your court is worthwhile. Keep an eye for these issues, and should any of them arise, contact your court contractor for their professional advise:
Cracks
Cracks in the surface of the court are the most obvious sign that a professional assessment is needed. One mistake court owners make is waiting until spring to call. If cracks are left unrepaired over winter, water can freeze and expand in the existing cracks, causing more damage.
Weeds
Sometimes, cracks are so small that they are hardly noticeable. In this case, weeds are a telltale sign that the surface needs some repair, as they can push through hairline cracks. Enough weeds can push through the cracks and make them bigger.
Roots
Tree roots can extend further than you think under the soil. As roots grow, they can push up on the surface of the court, causing damage.
Water Pools
After a rain, if water pools on the surface of the court and remains, there may be issues with the drainage of your court. Standing water will cause damage to the court, so this is an issue to address immediately.
Dead Spots or Bubbling
Dead spots may not be visible to the eye, but when the ball hits one, you’ll know right away. If your ball drops and stops instead of bouncing back up, you’re court has a dead spot. Bubbling, on the other hand, is a visual sign. Bubbling on the court’s surface can cause a tripping hazard and is a sign of a damaged court.
