Basketball courts come in several different types of materials, all with their own pros and cons. Here are some of the most common court materials and their unique characteristics.
Hardwood
Indoor basketball courts are almost always made of hardwood – typically of hard maple. Hard maple is very dense, splinter-resistant, and easy to maintain and clean. Hardwood courts will remain in good condition for many years, making them the go-to indoor court material. They are also inherently shock absorbent, and can be installed with a layer of cushioning for some extra support for players’ joints.
Asphalt and Concrete
Your outdoor community basketball court is most likely made of asphalt or concrete. Asphalt and concrete are long-lasting, and better suited to outdoor use than hardwood. Hardwood courts can easily be damaged by weather and moisture. Asphalt and concrete; however, are not indestructible and will need to be maintained for eventual cracks and damages.
The biggest con for these courts is that they are hard, unforgiving surfaces that can be damaging to a player’s joints. It is also a rough surface to take a fall on.
Cushioned Courts
Asphalt and concrete courts can be made more comfortable with addition of a cushion layer underneath. We specialize in building cushioned courts that are gentle on players’ joints for hours of fun. Cushioned courts typically have a layer of rubber cushioning underneath a vinyl, polypropylene plastic, or concrete surface.
Multi-Purpose Courts
Here at Hinding, we LOVE a multipurpose court. We often build basketball courts that double as a place to play tennis or pickleball. Our courts are cushioned and comfortable for hours of practice time or fun! We do custom colors and graphics as well to really personalize your court.
Conclusion:
There are several different options for a quality basketball court material. Some are better for outdoor use, and some for indoor use. Some are easier on the joints, but others can fatigue a player a lot quicker.
